The Mummy (DVD)

The Mummy is a popular 1999 action-adventure film directed by Stephen Sommers and starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. A remake of the 1932 classic, it became a significant box office success and launched a new franchise. The film opens in ancient Egypt, where the high priest Imhotep is buried alive under a curse for having an affair with Pharaoh Seti I's mistress, Anck-su-namun, and murdering the Pharaoh. The Medjai, the Pharaoh's guards, vow to prevent Imhotep's return. In 1926, adventurer Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) is saved from execution by Egyptologist Evelyn "Evie" Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) and her brother Jonathan (John Hannah). In exchange, Rick agrees to lead them to the lost city of Hamunaptra, which he had discovered while in the French Foreign Legion. In Hamunaptra, they inadvertently awaken the cursed Imhotep by reading aloud from the Book of the Dead. Imhotep, now a powerful mummy, begins to restore his human form by preying on the treasure hunters who unleashed him. Rick, Evelyn, and Jonathan must now find the golden Book of Amun-Ra, the only way to defeat Imhotep, and stop him before he can sacrifice Evelyn and resurrect his lover.
