The Ways Of Kung Fu [1980] (DVD)

This one starts pretty much the same as many kung fu movies of the period, with a 'Rudolph the Reindeer' style story of a wimpy kid who is the butt of all the other trainee monks cruelty, so much so they even deny him the chance to join in all their temple games. The swines! Cue woeful comedy moments.. However one day his masters recognise the potential of the young monk and send him away to protect him from an even bigger bully of a monk that happens to have recently taken residence in the temple. So off he goes on his merry way to stay with the abbot's brother out in the countryside. When he finally arrives, after being saved several times from bandits, he soon realises that his new master is a belligerent old coot who along with his family, is seemingly obsessed with kung fu! Which is a shame for our wimpy hero because he doesn't see any merits in fighting whatsoever.. Two years later down the line though (about 20m screen time) and our hero has been galvanised into a fighting machine and on his return to his temple realises things have taken a turn for the worse in his absence, forcing him to use the skills he's learnt...
